Psychotropic medications in children & youth

Notice:

Consumers, parents, caregivers and clinicians have expressed concern regarding the use of psychotropic medications in children and adolescents. When considering these medications, be sure to learn as much as possible about them.

Example questions to ask your prescribing clinician about your youth’s medication

  • What are the side effects which commonly occur with this medication?
  • Are there any other medications or foods which my child should avoid while taking the medication?
  • What do I do if a problem develops (if my child becomes ill, doses are missed, or side effects develop)?
  • How will the medication help my child? How long before I see improvement?  When will it work?
