Crisis Resources

Notice: **IF YOUR CHILD’s life is in danger, CALL 911**

What to do in a crisis

Emergencies

An emergency is when your child/youth’s life is in danger and needs help right away. In an emergency, you must act fast:

  • Call 9-1-1! You do NOT need to call Magellan first. 9-1-1 can take them to a hospital right away.
  • Your child can use any hospital, even if they are in another city or state.
  • Once your child is safe, call your family care coordinator on your High Fidelity Wraparound (HFWA) team to tell them about the crisis. Ask them to set up a team meeting.
  • Contact your child’s primary care or behavioral health provider to see if they can offer more help.

Crisis Communication

Magellan has a central location for crisis communication resources that may be helpful after a traumatic event. The resource page includes tip sheets and links to resources on the Ready.gov website, such as guides and videos for nearly 30 different types of traumatic events. We realize that we may not be aware of all traumatic events that our members encounter, but our resources are available 24/7/365.

Youth crisis support

What is a crisis? A crisis is any situation where your child/youth is acting in a way that you believe could lead to an emergency. If this is the case, do the following:

  • Call Magellan toll-free at 1-855-883-8740. You can talk to a mental health professional any time.
    • Magellan will help figure out your level of need and help organize support. This could include:
      • Asking your child and family team to take action.
      • Linking to local resources and/or hospital care if needed.
    • Call a doctor if you don’t already have one. This can be set up through state-supported resources to help avoid a crisis.

Other crisis support options

National services for youth in crisis are also available in non-life-threatening times. If your child’s life is in danger, call 9-1-1!

These resources are free, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and are open to anyone.

Crisis centers

Wyoming crisis centers are around the state for families in need. They have a 24-hour a day, no cost, “open door, open phone” policy.

Crisis shelters provide helpful timeouts for families dealing with high levels of stress. Higher stress levels may happen because of the child or youth’s behavior or other factors in the home. Crisis shelters provide a safe, nurturing setting and non-judgmental help, support, and resources for the whole family. The goal of crisis shelters is to:

  • reunite the family
  • provide stronger coping tools for the family
  • reduce tension the family is experiencing.

About providers

There are four types of people who help with High Fidelity Wraparound services:

  • Family Care Coordinators (FCC): Families and youth who join the CME program pick an FCC to work with. This person is in charge of making sure the wraparound process happens for the family. They run meetings, keep records, and work with other professionals. The FCC helps families see a positive future and teaches them how to make plans and get the help they need. Over time, the FCC’s role gets smaller as families become more independent.
  • Family Support Partner (FSP): FSPs are part of the wraparound team and have been through similar experiences as the families they help. They understand what the families are going through and can offer support. FSPs help families deal with tough situations and find other people who can help them. They also help families learn new skills and become more confident.
  • Youth Support Partner (YSP): YSPs are young adults between 18 and 26 who have been part of the mental health, special education, child welfare, or juvenile justice systems. They can work one-on-one or in groups with young people who need help building skills.
  • Respite Providers: Respite services offer short breaks for families who need a rest from their daily responsibilities. These breaks are temporary and should be used less as families find other people to help them.
Preparing for High Fidelity Wraparound

Parents and children/youth can prepare for Wraparound by taking a few actions before or during the beginning of the process:

  • learn about the model and typical services
  • learn about the role of the family in Wraparound
  • identify key support people for the family (formal and informal/natural)
  • connect with professionals (teachers, counselors, doctors, etc)
  • prepare to actively participate in the process
  • engage in self-care
  • celebrate success

Assessments

CANS

The Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) tool helps adults understand what kids and teens need, and what they’re good at. Here’s how it works:

A basic explanation of the CANS:

  1. Assessment: The CANS bases needs and strengths on the family story. It gathers info about how kids are feeling, acting, and doing in different parts of their life. This includes environments like at school or home.
  2. Identifying Needs: By using the CANS, adults can figure out what kids might need help with, like feeling sad, behaving in certain ways, or dealing with hard family situations.
  3. Highlighting Strengths: Along with finding needs, the CANS also helps find what kids are good at, like having friends, being good at sports, or being creative. These strengths can be used to help them feel better and do better.
  4. Informing Treatment Planning: When adults know what kids need and what they’re good at, they can make a plan to help them. This plan might include things like talking to a counselor, joining a group, or getting extra help at school.
  5. Monitoring Progress: The CANS isn’t just used once—it’s used over time to see how kids are doing. By checking in regularly, adults can see if the plan is working and if anything needs to change.

Overall, the CANS helps adults support kids and teens better by understanding their needs and strengths, and making sure they get the right kind of help to feel better and do better.

ACEs

ACEs, or Adverse Childhood Experiences, are events that happen to kids before they turn 18. These experiences can affect a person’s body and mind even when they grow up. ACEs can be things like abuse or experiencing things at home like a parent who drinks or uses drugs, has a mental illness, or when parents split up.

There is research that shows that more ACEs can make people more likely to have health problems like heart issues, cancer, depression, addiction, and more. Families who know about ACEs and ways to help with them can help reduce health problems later in life.

How Do ACEs and Wraparound Connect?

ACEs can make things harder for kids. Kids with high ACE scores can need help from multiple systems and people. Wraparound understands that many things affect how kids grow up, like trauma, family struggles, problems with friends, and community support.

Wraparound uses teams to help kids and families get support to feel better. This team approach is helpful for kids with ACEs.

How Magellan Helps

Here at Magellan, we help families in Wyoming deal with ACEs by learning coping skills. We bring people together and make teams to support a special kind of help called the High Fidelity Wraparound model. This helps kids and families manage crises.

Magellan looks at what kids and families are good at and uses those strengths to build support systems. By working with strengths in Wyoming’s communities, we can make families stronger and give kids better chances in the future.

If you or someone you know is struggling because of ACEs, Magellan is here to help. Reach out to us at 855-883-8740 to find out more about how our Wraparound services can help you heal as a family.

And if you are a Wraparound provider and want to learn more about ACEs, Magellan can help with that too. Contact the Network team at Magellan.

CASII/ESCII

The Child and Adolescent Service Intensity Instrument (CASII) and the Early Childhood Service Intensity Instrument (ECSII) are tools used to help families and professionals figure out the best kind of care and support for children and teens.

  • CASII is for children and teens aged 6 to 18.
  • ECSII is for younger children, from birth to age 5.

These tools help assess what kind of services or programs your child might need to grow, learn, and thrive.

Why Are These Tools Important?

Every child is unique, and their needs can vary based on their age, challenges, and family situation. The CASII and ECSII help by:

  • Looking at your child’s emotional, social, and behavioral needs.
  • Considering how your family and community can support them.
  • Matching your child with the right type and amount of services.

An independent assessor of your choice will conduct a CASII/ECSII to qualify for the HFWA program. They will do this through a phone conversation or zoom. They will ask a series of questions of you and one other person in your child’s life to help support accessing services.

Level of Care
